Thursday, July 30, PM. Migrating 2. First the answer to your last question -- all things considered some of which I won't need to get into details about because of your objectives -- it will be much easier to first migrate the database to a back-end server, and then initate the upgrades, if you intend to upgrade.
If they do, then establish contigencies and remediations to deal with them. Once the upgrade is complete, you'll need to manually uninstall the WMSDE from each of the replica servers. If the servers have had regular file maintenance performed, and don't have a lot of legacy products in the database, upgrading it is a viable option.
Lawrence Garvin, M. Thursday, August 6, PM. Lawrence, Thank you very much for your response. You gave me the information I needed. I will begin the due diligence and post again with any questions. Tuesday, May 12, PM. Lawrence, I have been through the release notes and do not see any issues in my environment. Couple questions Is anything needed on client side? What size DB will I need as I have approx windows boxes? Thursday, May 21, PM. Friday, May 22, AM.
Lawrence, The upgrade went smoothly. Is there a way to import the approvals from my old WSUS installation to 3. Friday, June 26, PM. I'm confused Migrating approvals would require an export from the original WSUS v2 database. We opted for a fresh install due to the very limited maint on the DB over the past 4 years, per your suggestion.
I'll give the tools a try Thanks Have a great weekend Burke. Saturday, June 27, AM. Lawrence, My upgrde went well and we are patching. Thanks for your advice. I have a 5 of facilities that have been idle for over 6 months.
We are starting to re-activate them. The first plant restarted turned on PC's which all downloaded and started to install the approved patches for the time they were idle. The PC's are running slow as the install patches, and requier multiple reboots. We are also getting complaints about all the network activity.
Do you have any suggestions on how we can mitigate this when the next plant staqrts up? Wednesday, July 22, PM. Burke, this sounds like a good opportunity for a temporary on-site replica server installation. Where you have plants being started back up after a long period of idleness, I'd install a WSUS replica server -- maybe even on one of those PCs using Virtual Server -- and let the replica server do a one-time transfer of the needed content for those several hundred PCs. The other thing to consider is restricting the BITS download access to more appropriate times of the day.
There is a policy setting in Administrative Templates Network BITS that will allow you to restrict, either by bandwidth allocation or time-of-day, when a client can download across the network. Lawrence, Thanks! I do have a downstream server at each location what if I switch it to autonomous durring start up then back to replica when everyone is back up? Thursday, July 23, PM. Switching between autonomous and replica won't change the volume of traffic moving across the WAN, it will simply require that you manage a second console and a second set of approvals for that site.
Note: Managing a second set of approvals may be a desirable option. For one it would allow you to stage the deployment of the six months of updates currently missing. The affected clients were running v 7. The issue affected 40 - 50 clients both PCs and servers. Looks like the clients have not been updating. Is there an expediant way to for the update? THe clients experienceng the problem were using a GPO admin template that specified auto doenload and manual update 3.
We also found that: I noticed something. I'm still investigating though. Wednesday, July 29, PM. Looks like somebody in the Gary office has been creatively modifying the installation. Moving the "web content" i. This probably accounts for the v7. You should see your clients update to the v7. However, also be sure that you're properly maintaining the catalog in your WSUS environment. Superceded updates that are not needed by systems should be declined. There is a feature in the Server Cleanup Wizard to assist in doing this.
For declining superceded updates, this only needs to be run at the upstream server, and then at the next replica synchronization, the declinations will flow downward and help resolve performance issues for the replica server's clients. We have corrected the issue with self update at Gary and clients are now updating to 7. We have used the tool and are manualy cleaning up old pre updates in the catalog. Also note that this was about 30 days after we set up the new upstream server.
One of my colleagues said the a new installation makes a large change to the catalog after 30 days. I've not had any problems with the new one, I certainly consider it a major upgrade. There may be backend changes, I've not really looked. It doesnt require a reconfiguration of client machines, I can't really see any reason not to upgrade.
